Crossing the Equator, Sea Day 3

Here’s our position as of early this morning—about halfway between Hawaii and Tahiti.

Technically, we’ll cross the equator between 8 and 9 tonight.  Right now, we’re at 1 degree north latitude.  But, of course, an afternoon celebration was planned for maximum participation!  We went up to deck 15 to get a view of the ceremony.  Needless to say, it was crowded!

First, the activity director introduced the captain and the hotel director and seated them on fancy chairs (from Wonderland, I think).  The other top brass marched out in uniform and stood behind them.  Then actors costumed as mermaids, sea monsters, etc. came out.  Finally, King Neptune came out and was seated on a throne.  The legend is that polliwogs, those who haven’t sailed across the equator, must beg permission from King Neptune. They then brought out two new crew members (from Adventure Ocean). The women knelt down, and Neptune decreed that they had to undergo some tests.  First, several eggs were broken over their heads, then they doused them with icy water.  Finally, they had to kiss a fish

Charlie managed to get some video of King Neptune’s arrival (on the screen).

Last night before dinner we went to the wine bar and met a delightful Australian couple who told us they’ve been taking cruises for 55 years!  He said that he’s 85 and his wife is 82.  They are both very spry. #goals

We enjoyed dinner in Coastal Kitchen, though we both forgot our phones, so no pics. However, the only new menu item we tried was the appetizer of short ribs and gnocchi. Yum!  We both had wedge salads, then the Moroccan chicken.  And we both had coffee pot de creme for dessert.

This morning we dutifully walked for 30 minutes, then at 10 I went to the crafting group.  There were about two dozen of us today!  We all had a good time talking as we worked. A young woman from Alaska was especially interesting. She said in high school, their outdoor sports were held unless the temperature dropped to 30-below! She has cruised a lot and made me want to go on the Japanese cherry blossom cruise in April.  She said it was incredible.

For lunch today we built salads in the Solarium Bistro, which was surprisingly uncrowded.  We’ll do that again.
