First Sea Day before New Zealand

Today at noon, our captain announced that we’re currently in the least populated time zone, UTC-11.  American Samoa has about 54,000 people.  That’s your future Learned League fact for the day.

Today I also learned that we’ll indeed go to bed on the 24th, and the next morning it will be the 26th, thanks to the International Date Line.  A woman in the crafting group did this cruise last year and said that’s how it worked.

If you’re thinking that I’m scraping the bottom of the barrel for blog fodder, you’re right! I was also asked by an Australian woman if we (Americans) could cruise all year, because they can only cruise from there from October through April. The Australians in the crafting group have all cruised extensively, but they usually have to fly somewhere first. It has been interesting learning more about life Down Under.

Due to last night’s time change, we were awake at 4:30.  Charlie went for coffee soon after that.  It was already light outside.  We had our walk, and when I went to crafting, he visited the casino.  We met in the Solarium Bistro to make salads at their very good salad bar.

If you’re wondering how we spend our time on Sea Days, I’ve read 12 books, knit half a pair of socks and most of a hat, and watched quite a bit of Netflix. Besides going to the casino,  Charlie plans future cruises (Alaska next August, for a back-to-back), watches YouTube videos, and relaxes on the balcony. It’s cooler today, about 75 degrees, which is a bit cool in the wind.

This next map really makes us feel that we’re in the middle of nowhere, with no familiar place names.

The next one gives you a better idea of our location. It’s three more days from here to Tauranga, New Zealand.

Thanks for reading!
