St. Thomas and St. Maarten

As I mentioned yesterday, our St. Thomas tour was canceled, so we stayed on board the ship. We had a cooked breakfast in Coastal Kitchen before repairing to the suites deck to read (me) or otherwise spend time. It was perfect weather again. We finally showered and dressed for the day about 11:45, then went in search of lunch. We ended up at Taco Loco, with make-your-own tacos and premade quesadillas, plus margaritas, of course. Very good! And no lines!

Yesterday afternoon we lazed about, with me mostly glued to my book. We also spent time watching a crew preparing to load a giant yacht (see opposite side of the barge) onto a barge that already held two smaller sailboats. It took all afternoon, and it still wasn’t on board when the men quit for the day.

We had a nice dinner, again in Coastal Kitchen, where we enjoyed chatting with a couple around our age seated next to us. They are Pinnacle level, and they’ll also be on our transatlantic cruise. They’re from McKinney. I had a seafood “veloute,” basically a bisque, followed by a crab cake, and both were very good. I chose chocolate cake for dessert and left nothing behind.

Then we went to Intense, the aqua show, which included aerialists, as well as high divers, synchronized swimmers, dancers, and lots of drummers and loud music. It was about twice as long as it needed to be, IMO, but the performers were remarkable and with energy to spare.  (Note to self: Never book a stateroom near the aqua theater!)

The foodie tour of St. Maarten today was very good! There were 16 of us signed up, and we had a new-looking air-conditioned minibus.  We were the oldest, with an Ohio couple a little younger, plus several young couples. The first stop was for cheese, at a Dutch shop where we tried five or six kinds, along with a glass of Cava. They were all delicious, but we only bought one wedge to take home.

Then we went to a roadside restaurant for barbecue chicken and ribs, plus sides, and it was good, if not great. Next was a French bakery on the French side of the island, where we sampled four pastries, all delicious!

Finally, we did a rum tasting, and that was interesting, too. The flavored ones are especially tasty!

Tomorrow is a sea day as we turn around and head back towards Port Canaveral. I appreciate any comments, so I know someone is reading this!

  2. Foodie tour!! I love it! That sounds very fun. We love the aqua show but agree that we would not want to stay anywhere near that theater.
