Dining at the Athens Capital Hotel

After much-needed showers and naps following our long walking tour yesterday, we had dinner in the hotel’s rooftop restaurant, Mappemonde (Map of the World).  Our meal was outstanding!

Perusing the menu

We started with the Green Salad “Twenty,” described as a variety of 20 salad leaves and herbs, baby vegetables, chestnuts, hazelnuts, truffle, amaranth chips and dressing with aged Asyrtiko vinegar from Santorini.”  It was SO good, and it included several greens we’d never seen before, plus some edible flowers. The truffle added a wonderful flavor.

For my entree, I chose the Sole Meunière, with brown butter, capers, lemon, local greens, cauliflower, Jerusalem artichoke, potato, and salsify.  It was beautifully plated and delicious.

Charlie always chooses bouillabaisse if it’s offered.  This version didn’t disappoint, with grouper, scallops, mussels, clams, saffron, lemon, fennel and fresh baked baguette with rouille sauce.

Their dessert menu was too good to skip!  Charlie chose the Black Forest:  bitter chocolate mousse, cherry, Kirsch liqueur, with added chocolate sauce.

I had to try their house specialty, fir honey with Greek aromas. It included fir honey cream, “melomakarono” (Greek honey cookies), seasonal fruits (kumquat), and chamomile sorbet.  What a beautiful dessert!  They also brought us complimentary Greek dessert wine.

Sunset happened before our entrees arrived, so Charlie went out to the pool terrace to capture it.

After dinner he took this photo of the illuminated Parthenon.

We walked down one flight of this amazing spiral staircase to our floor.

This morning I managed to get a few photos of the breakfast spread that comes with our room. I was intrigued by the frame of honeycomb we could cut ourselves.

There’s an extensive display of pastries!

This morning I selected some fresh fruit, guacamole (very good!), bacon, a smashed potato, two dolmades (stuffed grape leaves), and, of course, a chocolate croissant.

Here’s a bonus picture of our private terrace, where we enjoyed our room service dinner the first night.

Now we’re off to walk through the garden established by Queen Amalia, the first Queen of modern Greece in the 19th century.  A little shopping will follow.  More later!
